CHRDI Calls for Stronger Human Rights Protections

Sierra Leone – December 10, 2025: Abdul Fatoma, Executive Director of the Campaign for Human Rights and Development International (CHRDI), has urged Sierra Leone and the international community to strengthen commitments to human rights and the rule of law. He made the call during a ceremony hosted by the EU delegation to commemorate International Human Rights Day.

Speaking on Wednesday, Fatoma highlighted the importance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), describing it as “a beacon of hope for dignity, equality, and justice worldwide.” He noted that this year’s theme, “Our Everyday Essentials,” underscores that human rights are not abstract ideals but fundamental necessities for a dignified life.

Fatoma thanked International IDEA and the EU for recognizing CHRDI’s work in promoting transparency and accountability in Sierra Leone. He pointed to the organization’s efforts in monitoring police detention facilities and courts, facilitating access to justice, and empowering communities as examples of collective action driving change.

However, he warned that international law and the rule of law are under threat, citing constitutional and legal reforms in some states that undermine independent institutions. “Impunity for violations of national and international law is rampant. Disregard for the rule of law should concern us here and outside this room,” he said.

Fatoma stressed that while the UDHR has paved the way for treaties and laws worldwide, including in Sierra Leone, much remains to be done to fully realize its vision. He called for governments, civil society organizations, and individuals in Sierra Leone to unite in protecting vulnerable populations and upholding human rights.

To illustrate the importance of rights at the community level, Fatoma shared the story of Mariama, a young girl from northern Sierra Leone who defied cultural barriers to pursue education. Her determination inspired her community to embrace girls’ education, proving that courage and advocacy can transform lives.

The CHRDI leader also outlined key “everyday essentials” that must be prioritized:

  • Access to quality education
  • Quality healthcare
  • Clean water and sanitation
  • Fair justice
  • Equality and dignity

“The EU delegation’s partnership with International IDEA underscores the importance of human rights in our everyday lives. Together, we can make human rights a reality, every day, for everyone,” Fatoma concluded.

The event formed part of global commemorations of International Human Rights Day, marking the anniversary of the adoption of the UDHR in 1948.
