FREETOWN — In a landmark gesture of humanitarian support, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has undertaken a major renovation of the Intensive Care Units (ICUs) at Connaught Hospital in Freetown. The initiative is part of preparations for the 7th annual Strengthening Families Conference (SFC), set to take place later this year.

The renovation project, along with a substantial donation of lifesaving medical equipment, aims to enhance critical care services at Sierra Leone’s largest and most vital health facility. The upgrades are expected to benefit more than eight million citizens who rely on Connaught Hospital for essential healthcare.

At a commissioning ceremony held on-site, Elder Isaac Morrison, Second Counselor of the Africa West Area Presidency of the Church, reaffirmed the organization’s mission to improve lives and serve communities.

“This project reflects our deep commitment to alleviating burdens and uplifting lives through improved healthcare,” he stated. “It is not merely charity, but a sacred duty inspired by the example of Jesus Christ.”

Representing the government, Deputy Minister of Health, Professor Dr. Charles Senessie, praised the Church’s contribution, describing it as a major boost to national healthcare objectives. “Collaboration between faith-based organizations and the government is key to strengthening our health systems. Together, we are committed to delivering quality care to the people of Sierra Leone,” he said.

Dr. Mustapha Kabba, Chief Medical Officer at Connaught, described the donation as a “game-changer” that would elevate the hospital’s ability to deliver timely and effective care. Hospital Care Manager, Dr. Ibrahim Kapuwa, added that the improvements would significantly expand access to critical care and restore public confidence in the healthcare system.

The Church also provided a wide range of vital equipment, including:

– 10 Vital Sign Monitors

– 10 Patient Monitors

– 10 Hand-held Pulse Oximeters

– 10 Suction Machines

– 15 Sphygmomanometers

– 2 Electronic ICU Beds

– 8 Manual Hospital Beds

– 15 Bedside Lockers

– 5 UV Lights

– 2 ECG Machines

– 5 Infusion Pumps

– 1 ABG Analyzer

– 2 Defibrillators

– 5 Hand-held Dopplers

– 5 Diathermy Machines

The donation and facility upgrade underscore the Church’s broader mission of holistic community development, aligning with the goals of the upcoming Strengthening Families Conference.

The 7th SFC will convene faith leaders, healthcare experts, government officials, and families from across West Africa to explore practical strategies for building resilient and healthy family systems.
