Confucius Institute Sierra Leone Hosts 2026 Spring Festival Gala

Freetown, Sierra Leone – February 6, 2026 – The Confucius Institute at Fourah Bay College (FBC) celebrated the Chinese New Year with a vibrant Spring Festival Gala at the Taiji Garden, Kort-right 22, FBC. The event brought together Chinese nationals and Sierra Leoneans in a colorful display of culture, friendship, and unity, reinforcing the long-standing ties between China and Sierra Leone.

Festive Atmosphere

The ceremony featured striking red and yellow decorations symbolizing prosperity and success in Chinese culture. Guests enjoyed a lively programme of performances, cultural exchanges, and goodwill messages.

Highlights of the Gala

Lion Dance Performance: The Martial Arts Club opened the evening with an energetic Lion Dance, drawing enthusiastic applause.

Masters of Ceremony: Four MCs—two Chinese women and two Sierra Leonean men—guided proceedings, spotlighting achievements in educational cooperation and scholarship opportunities.

Diplomatic Remarks: Mr. Zhang Dianbin, Counsellor at the Chinese Embassy, noted that 2026 marks the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations, describing the partnership as strong and mutually beneficial.

University Leadership: Vice Chancellor Aiah Lebbie emphasized the importance of cultural collaboration and educational partnerships, calling the celebration a symbol of unity and shared growth.

Cultural Expansion: Mrs. Wu Cui highlighted the growth of Chinese language teaching sites and cultural programmes across Sierra Leone, describing the gala as a platform for friendship and cooperation.

Entertainment & Engagement

The evening featured Chinese songs by Ballanta Academy students, traditional instrumental music, poetry recitals, and cultural dances. Interactive Q&A sessions, lucky draws, and discussions on Chinese cultural symbols added educational value.

The gala concluded with musical performances, a martial arts display, and a group photograph capturing the spirit of unity and celebration.
