Freetown, July 7, 2026: Minister of Planning and Economic Development, Kenyeh Barlay, has assured that Sierra Leone stands to benefit economically and diplomatically from hosting the ECOWAS Mid-Year Summit later this month.
Speaking at the Government’s weekly press conference at the Miatta Civic Centre, the Minister said preparations for the summit have united government institutions, development partners, local stakeholders, and communities in a coordinated effort to ensure its success.
She explained that development partners have aligned their support with President Julius Maada Bio’s four strategic priorities for ECOWAS: restoring constitutional order, strengthening regional security, deepening economic integration, and advancing institutional reforms. These priorities, she noted, are designed to reinforce ECOWAS’ role in promoting peace, democratic governance, and sustainable development across West Africa.
Minister Barlay further announced that Sierra Leone will host the West African Integration Summit later this year, as part of broader efforts to strengthen regional cooperation. She highlighted that institutional reforms under the Compact for the Future will improve ECOWAS’ efficiency and responsiveness in addressing emerging regional challenges.
Beyond diplomacy, the Minister stressed that the summit presents significant economic opportunities for Sierra Leone. Increased demand for accommodation, transportation, catering, tourism, and other services is expected to benefit local businesses. She added that ECOWAS has encouraged delegates to utilise locally owned hotels to maximise economic gains for Sierra Leonean entrepreneurs.
The ECOWAS Mid-Year Summit is expected to bring together Heads of State, ministers, diplomats, and development partners from across West Africa, positioning Sierra Leone as both a regional diplomatic hub and a beneficiary of new economic opportunities.
