FBC Denies Sale of Staff Quarters, Urges Action on Land Encroachment

By Salleiu S. Kanu

Freetown, Sierra Leone – October 1, 2025: The University of Sierra Leone’s Fourah Bay College (FBC) has firmly denied recent social media claims alleging the sale of staff quarters, calling the reports unfounded and misleading.

In an official statement issued by the Directorate of Communication and International Relations, the FBC administration clarified that no university quarters have been sold and described the post as a deliberate attempt to misinform the public.

The statement comes amid growing concerns over persistent land encroachment at the Tree Planting Axis—a critical area of the college’s property. Despite a landmark High Court ruling on July 11, 2024, by Hon. Justice Unisa Kamara affirming FBC’s legal ownership and granting immediate possession of the land, the college has yet to reclaim it due to ongoing security challenges.

The administration warned that the delay in enforcing the court order poses serious risks:

  • It hampers future development and expansion plans, especially as FBC prepares to celebrate its 200th anniversary in 2027.
  • It emboldens encroachers who have infiltrated the campus, jeopardizing the safety of students and staff.
  •  It threatens the local ecosystem, including the historic Botanical Garden and the vital water catchment area serving greater Freetown.

FBC is calling on all stakeholders, including government authorities, civil society, and the public, to support the immediate implementation of the court order and safeguard the institution’s future.
