Freetown, Sierra Leone – In a major step toward strengthening aviation safety, Freetown International Airport (FIA) has launched a comprehensive overseas training programme for its Airport Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) personnel at IGA Istanbul Airport, Türkiye.
The initiative covers 60 firefighters, with the first cohort of 15 commencing training in July 2026. The remaining participants will travel in successive groups over the coming months.
According to FIA management, the programme is part of the airport’s commitment to capacity building and operational excellence. It features intensive Live Fire Drill Training using advanced aircraft simulators and pressure-fed aircraft engine fire systems.
Training Objectives
- Emergency response readiness: Firefighters are exposed to realistic scenarios replicating aircraft emergencies.
- Technical expertise: The drills enhance skills in handling complex fire situations.
- International standards: The programme aligns with global aviation safety requirements.
- Confidence building: Participants gain practical experience to respond swiftly and effectively.
