New York City, USA — September 22, 2025:

Sierra Leone’s First Lady, Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, has been awarded the prestigious AEMA BLACK PRIZE Award 2025 in recognition of her outstanding contributions to humanity and her unwavering commitment to empowering women and girls across the globe. The award was presented during the African Economic Global Convergence (AEG) 2025 summit, held in parallel with the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York City.

The AEMA BLACK PRIZE, established by the African Economic Media Alliance (AEMA), honors individuals of African descent who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, innovation, and impact in advancing social justice, economic empowerment, and human rights. The award celebrates changemakers whose work uplifts marginalized communities and inspires global transformation.

In her acceptance speech, Dr. Bio reflected on her journey as a passionate advocate for gender equality and child protection. She highlighted her instrumental role in championing the Prohibition of Early Marriage Bill, which was recently passed into law in Sierra Leone, and her efforts to institutionalize November 18 as the International Day for the Prevention of and Healing from Child Sexual Exploitation, Abuse, and Violence.

“Empowering women is not just a goal—it is a necessity for sustainable development,” Dr. Bio stated. “This award is a tribute to the resilience and determination of women and girls around the world. I dedicate it to their continued empowerment and advancement.”

She also expressed heartfelt gratitude to God and her husband, His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio, for supporting her advocacy work. “This recognition would not have been possible without the space and encouragement I’ve received to speak boldly for those whose voices are often unheard,” she added.

The AEG 2025 summit convened global leaders, policymakers, and business executives to explore solutions to Africa’s economic challenges and opportunities. Dr. Bio’s address was a highlight of the summit, drawing attention to the intersection of gender equity and sustainable development.

Her recognition with the AEMA BLACK PRIZE Award cements her status as a leading voice for women’s rights and social justice, both within Sierra Leone and on the global stage
