Freetown, Sierra Leone – Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr OBE delivered a compelling address on Monday, April 28, 2025, at the Salone Day National Symposium, calling for leadership that prioritizes citizens’ welfare as Sierra Leone marks 64 years of independence.

The symposium, organized by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education, was attended by Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, government ministers, and other distinguished guests. In her opening reflections, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr explored the legacy of Sierra Leone’s independence from colonial rule, emphasizing that national resources should serve the interests of the people, fostering prosperity and growth.

Reflecting on Sierra Leone’s economic trajectory, she noted that at the time of independence, the country had one of the highest GDP per capita rates in West Africa, estimated between $140 and $160 USD (based on 1960 prices). This economic strength placed Sierra Leone alongside rapidly developing nations such as Singapore and Malaysia. However, she pointed out that while Singapore and Malaysia’s economies have soared beyond $500 billion and $407 billion respectively, Sierra Leone’s GDP remains under $9 billion.

Despite these economic challenges, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr outlined a vision for national development, highlighting the importance of decentralization, effective leadership, and investment in homegrown talent. She underscored the need for professionalism across all sectors and the critical role of independent governance, urging that civil society and the press must operate freely to ensure accountability and transparency.

“Our national prosperity must be seen, felt, and tasted by all citizens of Mama Salone,” she stated, emphasizing the importance of sustainable and inclusive growth. She urged leaders to harness Sierra Leone’s human capital, invest in infrastructure, and foster innovation to drive the nation forward.

Ending on a hopeful note, the mayor expressed confidence in Sierra Leone’s ability to overcome its challenges and transform hope into reality through committed leadership and collective action.
