Freetown Sees Major Boost in Electricity Supply, IGR Survey Finds

Sierra Leone — October 23, 2025: A new report from the Institute for Governance Reform (IGR) has revealed significant improvements in electricity access and reliability across Freetown, marking a major milestone for the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA).

According to the survey, nearly 80% of residents reported noticeable enhancements in electricity supply over the past year. The West End recorded the highest satisfaction, with 83% of respondents acknowledging better service. Central Freetown followed with 77%, while 71% of East End residents confirmed greater reliability.

Overall, 76% of those surveyed said electricity services had strengthened, although 12% saw no change and another 12% reported a decline.

While the findings highlight EDSA’s progress in expanding and stabilizing power delivery, the report also underscored persistent challenges — particularly the rising cost of electricity, which remains a concern for many households.

In response, EDSA has pledged to tackle affordability issues by boosting operational efficiency, maintaining stable voltage levels, and intensifying efforts to combat power theft and illegal connections.

“We are gladdened by the positive feedback from citizens and remain dedicated to providing consistent, affordable, and transparent electricity services,” said Tesman Egbe, Acting Director General of EDSA.

EDSA also credited the Ministry of Energy for its technical support and coordination, and expressed gratitude to IGR for its commitment to evidence-based research that informs policy and supports Sierra Leone’s broader energy agenda.
