November 26, 2025: Sierra Leone’s health sector has received a significant boost following the donation of medical and laboratory equipment valued at $1.1 million, funded by the Global Fund and the United Kingdom Government, with technical support from the World Health Organization (WHO).
The official handing-over ceremony was held on Wednesday at the National Public Health Agency (NPHA) in Cockrill, Freetown.
Speaking at the event, Minister of Health Dr. Austin Demby described the donation as critical to strengthening the country’s health security and readiness to respond to disease outbreaks. He noted that the equipment will enhance the diagnosis and management of infectious diseases, with some items earmarked for deployment to Connaught Hospital, Sierra Leone’s main referral facility.
Dr. Demby expressed gratitude to the UK Government and WHO for their continued support, assuring that the donated supplies will be used effectively and distributed to designated health facilities for maximum impact. He emphasized that the government remains committed to complementing these efforts with its own procurement of medical supplies.
According to the Ministry of Health, the consignment includes emergency medicine supplies and infection prevention and control (IPC) tools, which are vital as Sierra Leone continues to face vulnerability to disease outbreaks.
The WHO Country Representative reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to working alongside the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria in supporting Sierra Leone’s health sector. He stressed that the donated materials will significantly strengthen emergency preparedness, disease surveillance, and the resilience of the healthcare system.
Dr. George further highlighted that the equipment will reinforce laboratories, hospitals, and emergency response systems, underscoring their importance in safeguarding public health.
