Government Suspends USD 25 Airport Security Fee

By George M.O. Williams

The Ministry of Internal Affairs has announced the temporary suspension of the USD 25 Airport Security Fee charged at the Freetown International Airport, effective Monday, 6th July 2026.

In a public notice issued on 3rd July 2026, the Ministry said the suspension follows a ministerial directive and will remain in effect until further notice.

According to the Ministry, the decision was taken to allow for a comprehensive review of the current contract framework, facilitate the completion of an ongoing independent Special Audit by the Audit Service Sierra Leone (ASSL), and assess a more seamless and integrated fee collection system aimed at reducing inconvenience for passengers.

The Ministry clarified that the suspension does not amount to the termination of the existing operating contract. It stated that Securiport (SL) Limited will continue to maintain its core technological background operations, including the logging of standard inbound and outbound passenger traffic data, excluding diplomatic passport holders.

The Ministry further called on all airport authorities to ensure full compliance with the directive to guarantee a smooth transition when the suspension takes effect on 6th July. It also expressed appreciation to the public for their continued cooperation.

The temporary suspension will remain in force pending the outcome of the ongoing review and audit process.
