Sierra Leone – June 19, 2026: The Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs has officially removed and withdrawn recognition of Paramount Chief Alimamy Sorie II (Kathenkeh) of Kunike Barina Chiefdom, Tonkolili District, citing a court ruling that annulled his 2010 election and the need to restore lawful governance in the chiefdom.
According to the Ministry, a Paramount Chieftaincy election held on February 14, 2010, declared Alimamy Sorie II as Paramount Chief-elect. However, a petition filed against the election led to a High Court judgment on April 16, 2012, annulling both the election and its outcome. The ruling restrained Alimamy Sorie II from acting as Paramount Chief pending a fresh election.
Minister of Local Government, Ambassador Tamba J.S. Lamina, stated that continued recognition of Alimamy Sorie II was no longer in the best interest of Kunike Barina Chiefdom. By virtue of powers vested in him under Sierra Leonean law, he ordered the immediate withdrawal of recognition effective June 19, 2026.
Directives Issued
The Public Notice directs Alimamy Sorie II to:
- Vacate office and relinquish all duties and privileges.
- Return insignia, properties, and documents belonging to the chiefdom to the Provincial Secretary.
- Comply with interim arrangements, under which a Regent Chief will oversee administration until a new election is conducted within six months.
Future Elections
The Ministry clarified that Alimamy Sorie II is not barred from contesting future Paramount Chieftaincy elections, provided they are conducted in line with customary law and state statutes.
Public Notification
All government ministries, local authorities, and members of the public have been formally notified to govern themselves accordingly.
The announcement marks a significant development in Tonkolili District, reinforcing the government’s commitment to lawful chieftaincy succession and stability in Sierra Leone’s traditional governance structures.
