In a celebration marked by national pride and overflowing joy, the Sierra Leone Female National Team, the Sierra Queens, received a hero’s welcome on Saturday, June 7 following their historic victory at the 2025 WAFU A Women’s Tournament in Mauritania.
The champions were met at the Guinea-Sierra Leone border by a high-powered delegation led by the President of the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA), Thomas Daddy Brima. He was accompanied by Vice Presidents Harold Nat-Johnson and Ali Badara Tarawallie, Eastern Region FA Chairman Prince Sa’Quee, SLFA Executive Officer Mohamed Jalloh, Acting General Secretary Mohamed Benson Bawoh, and the Minister of Sports, Madam Augusta James-Teima.
In a series of passionate speeches, football authorities from both the SLFA and government expressed immense gratitude and admiration for the Queens’ outstanding performance. The speakers also echoed a unified call for greater investment and support for women’s football in Sierra Leone.
Sierra Queens’ historic campaign in Mauritania did not just end with the championship trophy. The team brought home an impressive collection of individual accolades: four Woman of the Match awards, with three claimed by star goalkeeper Hannah Juna. Juna also earned the tournament’s Best Goalkeeper and Best Player awards. The fourth Woman of the Match award was won by Salamatu Kamara in the final clash against Senegal.
In her heartfelt vote of thanks, the Leader of Delegation, Madam Haja Ramatulai Kamara, expressed her deep appreciation to the players and the technical staff, led by Coach Hassan Malik Mansaray. She commended their championship mindset, discipline, and high level of professionalism that earned the nation such a historic triumph.
