Health Authorities Urge Vigilance Amid Rising Mpox Cases

By Sallieu S. Kanu

The National Public Health Agency (NPHA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MoH), has issued a renewed call for public vigilance following a continued increase in Mpox cases across Sierra Leone.

As of May 24, 2025, the country has recorded 3,059 confirmed cases, 1,685 recoveries, and 14 deaths, reflecting a case fatality rate of 0.4%. Health officials emphasize that the majority of patients recover with early diagnosis and supportive care.

Mpox, a viral disease, spreads through close physical contact, including skin-to-skin interactions, respiratory droplets, and contaminated materials such as clothing or bedding. It can also be transmitted through intimate contact, including oral, vaginal, or anal sex. Common symptoms include fever, rash, swollen lymph nodes, body aches, and, in some cases, genital lesions. While most cases are mild, severe illness can develop in individuals with weakened immune systems or underlying health conditions.

To curb further transmission, health authorities have advised the public to adhere to the following preventive measures:

  • Avoid close contact with individuals showing rashes or lesions.
  • Wash hands frequently with soap or use alcohol-based sanitizers.
  • Refrain from sharing personal items such as towels, clothing, or bedding.
  • Practice safe sex and avoid intimate contact if symptoms are present.
  • Seek medical assistance immediately if symptoms develop or call the emergency health hotline at 117.

NPHA and MoH are working closely with international partners to enhance surveillance, case management, and public awareness initiatives. Over 41,000 people have been vaccinated, with monitoring teams actively responding in affected districts.

Executive Director of the NPHA, Brig. Gen. Prof. Foday Sahr, reassured the public, stating: “There is no need to panic. We can beat this if we all stay alert and follow these simple steps. Let’s work together to protect our families and communities.”

The government remains committed to strengthening preventive measures and ensuring public safety through coordinated health efforts.
