Sierra Leone: The High Court of Sierra Leone has officially commenced its September 2025 criminal session, with a total of 75 cases set for further trial following preliminary hearings at the Magistrate Courts. The session was presided over by Justice Alfred Tommy Ganda, who called the cases for review and reassignment.

During the opening proceedings, several accused persons were sentenced to varying terms of imprisonment, while others were acquitted and discharged based on time already served. A number of cases were reassigned to different judges for full trial and determination.

Breakdown of Criminal Charges

The session’s docket is dominated by housebreaking and larceny, which account for 26 of the 75 cases. Other charges include: Housebreaking & Larceny –     26, Fraudulent Conversion – 9, Wounding with Intent – 8, Murder  – 7, Prohibited Drugs  – 6, Robbery – 6, Human Trafficking  – 4, Treason & Misprision of Treason -3, Embezzlement – 1, and Bigamy & Forgery     – 1.

When charges were read and explained, many accused persons entered guilty pleas and appealed for leniency. Defense counsel from the Sierra Leone Legal Aid Board supported their clients by urging the court to consider factors such as time served and personal circumstances in plea mitigation.

Cases deemed serious in nature—including murder, treason, and trafficking—were assigned to specific judges for full hearings. These matters have been adjourned to designated dates for trial.

The session marks a significant step in Sierra Leone’s judicial calendar, reflecting the court’s commitment to clearing its backlog and ensuring timely justice.
