HRCSL, Labour Ministry Probe Employee Death at Miro Forestry Company

Freetown, 3 October 2026: The Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone (HRCSL), through its Directorate of Business and Human Rights, and the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security (MLESS) have conducted a joint investigation meeting into the alleged death of an employee of Miro Forestry Company in Mile 91.

The meeting, held on 29 September 2026, was aimed at examining the circumstances surrounding the reported death of a company employee believed to be linked to the operations of Miro Forestry Company.

According to information presented during the investigation, Sulaiman B. Kamara, an employee who had worked with the company for more than four years, was reportedly found dead while on duty on 11 August 2026.

The joint investigation followed an earlier meeting convened by the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security, during which the management of Miro Forestry Company was summoned to provide an explanation regarding the circumstances leading to the employee’s death.

Officials from both institutions used the meeting to review available information and discuss measures aimed at ensuring accountability and the protection of workers’ rights.

At the conclusion of the engagement, the HRCSL and MLESS reaffirmed their commitment to closely monitor the operations of Miro Forestry Company, with particular attention to the working conditions and welfare of employees.

The two institutions also indicated that they would continue their investigations and await the final investigation report before issuing any further directives to the company.

The ongoing probe forms part of efforts by the government and human rights authorities to strengthen workplace safety standards, promote corporate accountability and safeguard the rights of workers across the country.
