Freetown, Sierra Leone – As India marks its 79th Independence Day, the High Commissioner of India to Sierra Leone, Mr. Baisnab Charan Pradhan, delivered a heartfelt message celebrating the occasion and reaffirming the enduring friendship between the two nations.
In his official statement, Mr. Pradhan extended warm greetings on behalf of the Government and people of India to the Government and citizens of Sierra Leone. He reflected on the historic significance of August 15, 1947, when India gained independence through the unity, resilience, and sacrifice of its people.
“This day marks the moment in 1947 when the people of India reclaimed their freedom and embarked on the journey of building a sovereign, democratic, and inclusive nation,” Mr. Pradhan stated. “It is a time to honour the vision of our leaders, the courage of our freedom fighters, and the enduring spirit of our citizens.”
Highlighting India’s progress over the decades, Mr. Pradhan noted the country’s achievements in economic development, science and technology, space exploration, education, healthcare, and renewable energy—all underpinned by a steadfast commitment to democracy and pluralism.
He also emphasized the warm and time-tested relations between India and Sierra Leone, rooted in shared values and a common commitment to peace and progress. The High Commissioner praised the growing partnership between the two countries, which has expanded across key sectors such as health, education, infrastructure, agriculture, energy, and digital technology.
“India remains committed to supporting Sierra Leone in its developmental aspirations, guided by the spirit of South–South cooperation,” he affirmed.
Mr. Pradhan concluded his message by celebrating the friendship between India and Sierra Leone and expressing confidence in the continued strengthening of bilateral ties.
“Together we will continue to strengthen our bonds for the mutual benefit of our peoples and contribute to a peaceful and prosperous future for all,” he said.
The Indian High Commission in Freetown hosted commemorative events to mark the occasion, bringing together members of the Indian diaspora, Sierra Leonean officials, and friends of India in celebration of the nation’s journey and its global partnerships.
