Japan Powers Sierra Leone’s Energy Future

Tombo Village, Western Rural District – December 8, 2025 – Sierra Leone’s Minister of Energy, Cyril Arnold Grant, has hailed Japan’s continued support for Sierra Leone’s development, describing the extension of the power distribution network along the Freetown Peninsular as a “generous gift” that will transform energy access for thousands of citizens.

Funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the project will install a new 33kv transmission line from the Goderich substation to proposed substations at Tombo and York, significantly boosting capacity and helping Sierra Leone reach its target of 78% energy access by 2030.
