Kadie Black Kamara Makes Historic Bid for Gballan Thallah Chieftaincy

Gballan Thallah, Munu Thala Chiefdom, July 2026 — A century-old tradition was broken in the Gballan Thallah Community as Kadie Black Kamara became the first woman in more than 100 years to contest the community’s chieftaincy election. Her candidacy, though unsuccessful, is being hailed as a landmark moment for women’s inclusion in traditional leadership across Sierra Leone.

Kamara’s decision was made possible through ABC Development’s MASIDAMA Project, which empowers women and adolescent girls through leadership training, mentorship, civic education, and advocacy. The initiative has worked extensively in Kambia and Port Loko Districts, equipping women with the skills and confidence to participate meaningfully in governance and community development.

Speaking after the election, Kamara credited the project’s training for inspiring her historic bid.

“The leadership training changed my mindset and gave me the courage to believe that women can also lead their communities. Even though I did not win, I have cleared a path that was once beyond reach. I am confident that I will win the next election,” she said.

Her candidacy sparked widespread discussion among residents, many viewing it as a sign of shifting attitudes toward women’s leadership in traditional governance.
