Freetown, January 22, 2026: The Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) today held a landmark press conference, with President Babadi Kamara pledging accountability and transparency as the defining features of his administration.
In his opening statement, Kamara described the event as historic, noting that it was the first time the Association had formally invited journalists to receive updates on its activities. He emphasized that football, as one of the world’s largest industries, requires Sierra Leone to assert its presence regionally and internationally.
“This press conference has been convened to provide information, ensure openness, and establish checks and balances for our stakeholders and the public,” Kamara said. “Within just five months, we have recorded huge achievements. This period has been both productive and fulfilling, considering the progress made so far.”
Acting Secretary General Mohamed Benson Bawoh announced that FIFA had lifted all financial restrictions previously imposed on the SLFA as of January 19, 2026. He described the development as a major boost for the Association’s operations and future projects.
Bawoh further disclosed that about 80% of SLFA staff have been trained as Safeguarding Officers, following mandatory FIFA online training. He stressed that safety must remain integral to football development in Sierra Leone.
On the national team, Bawoh revealed that the SLFA President and Executive Committee have secured international friendly matches for Leone Stars, including participation in the FIFA Series against Azerbaijan, St. Lucia, and Oman. He noted that these fixtures are crucial in preparing the squad for the AFCON 2027 qualifiers.
Bawoh also highlighted ongoing engagements between the SLFA, the National Sports Authority (NSA), and the Ministry of Sports regarding the Association’s autonomy. He insisted that for Sierra Leone to qualify for AFCON 2027, the Leone Stars must be managed entirely by the SLFA.
The press conference underscored the Association’s renewed commitment to transparency, safeguarding, and competitive readiness, marking a new chapter in Sierra Leone’s football administration.
