Lawyers Society Raises Alarm Over Trial Delays in High-Profile Murder Case

By Alimatu Jalloh

Freetown, Sierra Leone – 30 June 2025: The Lawyers Society has issued a formal letter to the Director of Public Prosecutions, expressing serious concern over repeated delays in the ongoing murder trial of Abdul Kpaka, who is accused of killing his girlfriend, Sia Fatu Kamara.

In the letter signed by General Secretary Mrs. Margaret A. L. Durios, the Society highlights the persistent absence of State Prosecutor Mr. Yusuf Isaac Sesay as the primary reason for the postponements. These disruptions, they argue, are causing public disillusionment and undermining confidence in the country’s justice system.

Justice Delayed, Rights Denied

The Society emphasized that the delays are not only affecting the prosecution of a case of national interest but are also infringing on Mr. Kpaka’s constitutional right to a fair and timely trial. Concerns were also raised about the potential degradation of critical evidence due to the passage of time, including fading witness memories and misplaced documentation.

Call for Immediate Action

The Society has urged the Director of Public Prosecutions to ensure Mr. Sesay’s consistent presence at court proceedings—or to appoint an alternate prosecutor immediately. “Justice delayed is justice denied,” the letter asserts, reiterating the legal profession’s commitment to fairness and due process.

The Lawyers Society concluded by reaffirming its readiness to support efforts aimed at restoring efficiency and credibility to the judicial system.
