Lungi, Sierra Leone – July 17, 2026: The Ministry of Health and the National Public Health Agency (NPHA) have showcased the newly upgraded Lungi Government Hospital, underscoring Sierra Leone’s investment in healthcare resilience as the nation prepares to host the 69th ECOWAS Heads of State and Government Summit.
Strategically located near Freetown International Airport, the hospital now features a state‑of‑the‑art Accident and Emergency (A&E) Unit — the first in its history — designed to deliver immediate assessment, stabilization, and treatment for trauma victims, accident casualties, and critically ill patients. Officials say the facility will reduce delays in emergency care, improve patient outcomes, and strengthen national emergency preparedness.
The redevelopment also includes a modern 150‑bed medical complex with operating theatres, intensive care facilities, maternity and paediatric wards, and expanded clinical services to meet rising demand. According to the Ministry of Health, the transformation reflects President Dr. Julius Maada Bio’s commitment to building a resilient healthcare system capable of handling routine needs and public health emergencies.
As summit preparations intensify, the Ministry and NPHA are coordinating with healthcare professionals and partners to ensure designated facilities are fully staffed and equipped. Officials emphasized that the hospital’s modernization represents a lasting investment in national health security, benefiting both international visitors and Sierra Leonean communities long after the ECOWAS Summit.
