Mark Ngegba Elevated to Judge

Freetown, Sierra Leone – Magistrate Mark Ngegba has been appointed as a Judge in the Judiciary of the Republic of Sierra Leone, marking a significant milestone in his distinguished career.

Ngegba, a seasoned legal professional, brings over two decades of experience spanning the military, legal, and human rights sectors. A retired Captain of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF), he seamlessly transitioned from military leadership to judicial excellence, demonstrating integrity and a deep commitment to the rule of law.

His journey in the legal profession began at the Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice, where he worked as a prosecutor in the Directorate of Public Prosecutions and contributed to legislative reforms. He later served at the Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone, holding key positions as Senior Human Rights Officer and Acting Director of Complaints, Investigations, and Legal Services.

In 2017, Ngegba was appointed to the bench, where he has since upheld fairness and judicial independence. His promotion to Senior Magistrate in 2021 further cemented his reputation, with additional responsibilities as the Judge Advocate at the RSLAF Courts Martial, overseeing military justice processes.

Ngegba holds a Bachelor of Laws with Honors (LLB Hons) from Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone, and a Barrister-at-Law (BL) degree from the Sierra Leone Law School. His extensive professional education includes certifications in anti-corruption law, conflict mediation, and military justice from institutions such as the Defence Institute of International Legal Studies (USA), the Clingendael Institute (Netherlands), and the Judge Advocate General’s School (US Air Force).

Over the years, he has actively participated in global discussions on legal reform, human rights, maritime security, and gender-based violence, attending conferences organized by the Commonwealth Magistrates’ and Judges’ Association, the United States DIILS, and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

Recognized for his professionalism and ethical standards, Ngegba’s appointment is expected to further strengthen Sierra Leone’s judiciary, reinforcing principles of fairness and public service in the nation’s legal system.
