Sierra Leonean artist Mash P has released a compelling new single, “Ghetto Hero,” under WAYout Arts, a track that narrates his personal struggles and triumphs growing up in the ghetto. The song has already gained widespread attention, resonating deeply with listeners across Sierra Leone and beyond.
A Story of Survival and Hope
Through “Ghetto Hero,” Mash P delivers raw and emotional storytelling, painting vivid images of his upbringing in one of Sierra Leone’s toughest neighborhoods. The song highlights daily encounters with violence and the transformative power of music, capturing the resilience of young people fighting to escape poverty and hardship.
Speaking on the release, WAYout Arts, a nonprofit organization supporting marginalized youth through creative expression, described the track as “deeply personal and socially relevant.”
“Mash P has poured his heart into this song,” said the management at WAYout Arts. “It’s not just his story—it reflects the realities of countless young people navigating their way out of poverty, crime, and trauma.”
Visual Storytelling Through Music Video
The official music video for “Ghetto Hero”, directed by MSK Slum Vision, further enhances the song’s powerful narrative. Featuring scenes from local communities, it captures Mash P’s journey from hardship to self-discovery, using art as a means of survival.
Listeners have praised the single, calling it “an anthem of the streets,” cementing Mash P’s reputation as one of Sierra Leone’s most authentic voices in music.
Mash P’s Journey: From Child Soldier to Musical Visionary
Born Nathaniel Sesay, Mash P’s life is a remarkable story of resilience. At just nine years old, he was captured by rebels during Sierra Leone’s civil war and forced to serve as a child soldier for five years. After the war, he faced rejection from his family and lived on the streets for twelve years, using music as a tool for survival and healing.
His breakthrough came when he connected with WAYout Arts, which helped him record his first tracks and develop his skills as a performer and producer. His music blends Afrobeat, dancehall, and reggae, tackling themes of hardship, hope, and resilience.
Notable releases include:
– “Different Story”
– “Bread ’n’ Butter” – Winner of Best African Music Video at the Prague Film Festival
Apart from music, Mash P is also a talented photographer, capturing the realities of life in Sierra Leone. His work has been exhibited in London, Manchester, Portland (USA), and Bridport Arts Centre.
Mash P’s talent led to him receiving a Global Talent visa and a scholarship to study music production in the UK. He has performed at Glastonbury Festival and toured with British singer Frank Turner. He is currently studying at the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance (ICMP) in London.
Future Aspirations
Mash P dreams of opening a free music and arts school in Taiama, his hometown, aiming to empower the next generation of Sierra Leonean youth through creativity.
“Music saved my life,” Mash P reflected. “Through this song, I want people to know that no matter where you’re from or what you’ve been through, your story matters—and you can rise.”
“Ghetto Hero” is available for streaming on all major platforms.
