Freetown, Sierra Leone – Aspiring musicians in Sierra Leone now have a unique opportunity to develop their talents and receive professional jazz training through the newly launched Music Heals Sierra Leone Jazz Scholarship Program 2025. The fully-funded initiative aims to equip young musicians with quality education, mentorship, and international exposure.
The scholarship, spearheaded by the non-profit organization Music Heals Sierra Leone, focuses on healing, creativity, and personal development through music. It is open to students interested in four key instrumental areas: trumpet, piano, saxophone, and keyboard.
During an exclusive interview on Monday, May 12, 2025, Simeon Bangura, CEO and founder of Music Heals Sierra Leone, underscored the vision behind the program. “We believe music is not just an art form but a tool for healing and transformation. This scholarship is our way of investing in the next generation of musicians, particularly those who might not otherwise afford formal training. Our goal is to nurture confident, technically sound, and globally competitive jazz musicians who can represent Sierra Leone on any stage,” Bangura stated.
Comprehensive Training & International Partnerships
The scholarship offers a range of benefits, including free tuition, mentorship opportunities, foundational jazz training, and performance confidence-building exercises. Students will also develop skills in improvisation, technical mastery, and stage presence.
Additionally, successful participants will receive an internationally recognized music certificate upon completion. The program is being run in partnership with leading international institutions such as La Probetta and Fundación Atabal, ensuring students receive instruction aligned with global standards.
Bangura emphasized the significance of these collaborations, noting that they enhance the credibility and scope of the training. “We want our students to be deeply rooted in their cultural identity while being exposed to international excellence in jazz. Our partnership ensures the curriculum remains both rigorous and relevant,” he added.
