Freetown, Sierra Leone – April 2026 — The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has urged President Julius Maada Bio to initiate a roundtable dialogue with the opposition All People’s Congress (APC), stressing the importance of unity and constructive engagement ahead of Sierra Leone’s 2028 general elections.
Speaking during a recent engagement, NDA Chairman Sheriff Barrie emphasized that dialogue between the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) and the APC is critical for national stability. He called on the newly appointed head of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL), Edmond Alpha, to uphold integrity and ensure free, fair, and transparent elections.
“Millions of Sierra Leoneans are relying on the Commission to deliver a credible electoral process that will be accepted by both the SLPP and the APC,” Barrie stated.
Referencing John 8:32 — “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free” — Barrie underscored the importance of honesty and accountability in electoral governance. He encouraged the ECSL to emulate democratic best practices, citing Senegal as an example where elections have been widely accepted by all political stakeholders.
The NDA Chairman also drew historical parallels, noting Karl Marx’s observation that history often repeats itself. He compared current political tensions between the SLPP and APC to divisions during Sierra Leone’s pre-independence period, urging leaders to prioritize national cohesion over partisan interests.
The NDA’s call for dialogue aligns with broader appeals for cooperation between Sierra Leone’s major political parties, highlighting the need for trust-building measures as the country prepares for the 2028 polls.
