Siera Leone, October 7, 2026: The Ministry of Health has unveiled a project panel for the construction of a new child-friendly isolation unit at the Ola During Children’s Hospital in Freetown, marking a significant step towards strengthening specialized healthcare services for children during disease outbreaks.

The initiative is designed to provide a safe and supportive environment where children suffering from infectious diseases can receive quality medical care while minimizing the risk of transmission. Health authorities say the facility will help ensure that young patients are treated with dignity and compassion, while offering reassurance and support to their families during difficult times.

Speaking during the unveiling ceremony on Tuesday, the Ministry of Health emphasized that the project represents more than the construction of a healthcare facility. According to the ministry, the new isolation unit will serve as a dedicated space where children can access specialized treatment in a setting specifically tailored to their needs.

The ministry noted that infectious disease outbreaks often place immense pressure on families, particularly when children require isolation and specialized medical attention. The new ward aims to address these challenges by creating a child-friendly space that promotes both physical recovery and emotional wellbeing.

“Every parent understands the fear and uncertainty that comes when a child’s illness worsens,” the ministry stated. “This project is about creating a safe place for children to heal while ensuring families receive the support and confidence they need during treatment.”

Beyond infrastructure development, the project includes a comprehensive capacity-building component for healthcare workers who will manage and operate the facility. Nurses, doctors, laboratory technicians and support staff will undergo specialized training in infection prevention and control, patient triage, intensive care management, facility maintenance, and psychosocial support services.

Health officials said investing in human resources is essential to ensuring the effectiveness and sustainability of the new isolation unit. The ministry stressed that well-trained healthcare professionals remain the backbone of quality healthcare delivery, particularly during public health emergencies.

The training programs are expected to strengthen the ability of frontline medical personnel to respond quickly and effectively to infectious disease outbreaks while maintaining high standards of patient care and safety.

The project forms part of broader efforts by the Government of Sierra Leone and its health sector partners to improve healthcare infrastructure measures, and contribute to better health outcomes for some of the country’s most vulnerable patients.

Health sector stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, describing it as an important investment in child health, healthcare resilience, and the overall strengthening of Sierra Leone’s healthcare system.
