Opposition Seeks Removal of Clerk over Legal Breach

By Sallieu S. Kanu

Freetown, Sierra Leone – May 13, 2025: The Leader of the Opposition in Parliament has issued a strong and urgent call for the immediate resignation of the Clerk of Parliament, citing serious breaches of legal and constitutional provisions governing public officers in Sierra Leone.

In an official statement released yesterday, the Opposition Leader expressed deep concern over what he described as the Clerk’s violation of the law and compromise of neutrality expected of his office.

Allegations Against the Clerk

At the center of the controversy is the Clerk’s public declaration to contest for the position of Secretary General of the Sierra Leone People’s  Party—a move the opposition argues is a direct violation of Section 15(a)(ii) of the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) Act.

The PPRC Act explicitly prohibits public officers from holding executive positions in political parties, reinforcing the principle of political neutrality in governance. Additionally, Section 26(2)(b) of the 1991 Constitution of Sierra Leone bars public officers from engaging in the management or affairs of political parties.

“These provisions are clear in their intent to protect the public service from partisan influence, particularly within sensitive institutions such as Parliament,” the Opposition Leader stated.

Beyond the legal violations, opposition members allege the Clerk has made derogatory public remarks about their party, further undermining his credibility and calling into question his ability to serve all Members of Parliament impartially.

Opposition’s Demand for Immediate Action

The Opposition Leader has issued an unequivocal demand for the Clerk’s immediate resignation, warning that failure to step down will result in a boycott of all engagements between the opposition and the Clerk’s office.

“I will no longer recognize his authority in that office,” the Opposition Leader declared.

The opposition is also considering further parliamentary measures to safeguard the integrity of the legislature.

Call for Institutional Accountability

The statement concluded with a strong appeal for swift action to uphold Parliament’s neutrality and credibility. The unfolding situation places significant scrutiny on governance structures, raising questions about adherence to constitutional provisions and institutional integrity.
