By George M.O. Wiliams

The Sierra Leone Immigration Department (SLID) has initiated a formal investigation following international media reports alleging that a Turkish national, recently arrested for criminal and drug-related activities, was found in possession of a Sierra Leone diplomatic passport.

Reports from Dutch, German, and Sierra Leonean outlets have raised serious concerns about how the individual obtained the high-level travel document, prompting swift action from the government.

Presidential Directive for Full Inquiry

Under the directive of His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio, SLID is conducting a comprehensive probe to: determine the circumstances under which the passport was issued; verify the authenticity of all supporting documentation; and Identify any procedural lapses or misconduct within the passport issuance process.

In addition to the specific case, SLID has announced a broader audit of all diplomatic passports issued by the Republic of Sierra Leone. The goal is to strengthen accountability, prevent future abuse, and safeguard the country’s diplomatic integrity.

In a release dated 13th October 2025, the Office of the Chief Immigration Officer reaffirmed SLID’s commitment to transparency and national reputation. The department emphasized that any confirmed wrongdoing would result in swift disciplinary and legal action.

The government views the integrity of its diplomatic privileges as paramount. The investigation is expected to send a strong message about Sierra Leone’s zero-tolerance stance on the misuse of official documents and its dedication to upholding the rule of law.

This development has sparked public interest and calls for greater oversight in the issuance of diplomatic credentials. The outcome of the investigation is awaited with keen attention.
