NEW YORK, USA: President Julius Maada Bio has announced his arrival in New York ahead of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 81), where he is expected to participate in a series of high-level meetings and engagements focused on advancing Sierra Leone’s national interests.
In a post on his official Facebook page, President Bio said he had arrived in the United States ahead of the annual gathering of world leaders, which is being held under the theme, “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.”
“I look forward to a productive High-Level Week, marked by meaningful participation in key events and bilateral meetings aimed at advancing our national interests,” the President stated.
President Bio is expected to join fellow heads of state and government, diplomats, development partners, and business leaders during the High-Level Week, which provides a global platform for discussing pressing international issues, including peace and security, sustainable development, climate action, economic transformation, and multilateral cooperation.
His participation is also anticipated to include bilateral discussions with world leaders and international partners aimed at strengthening cooperation and attracting investment opportunities for Sierra Leone.
Background on UNGA 81
The 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly officially opened on September 8, 2026, and is being presided over by Khalilur Rahman of Bangladesh. The session is being held under the theme “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.”
According to the United Nations, the theme reflects growing concerns over global conflicts, climate challenges, widening inequalities, technological transformation, and declining confidence in multilateral institutions. The session seeks to promote a more effective and responsive United Nations capable of addressing contemporary global challenges.
The General Debate of UNGA 81 is scheduled to take place from September 22 to 28, 2026, bringing together leaders from the UN’s 193 member states to outline their priorities and positions on key international issues. Major discussions during the session are expected to focus on sustainable development, climate resilience, peace and security, artificial intelligence governance, human rights, and reform of the multilateral system.
For Sierra Leone, the annual UN gathering offers an important opportunity to showcase the country’s development priorities, strengthen diplomatic relations, mobilize international support, and engage global partners on issues affecting national and regional development.
