Freetown, Sierra Leone – April 30, 2025 His Excellency Dr. Julius Maada Bio has officially inaugurated the National Governing Council of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) at State House, reinforcing Sierra Leone’s dedication to good governance, transparency, and democratic accountability.
The inauguration marks a pivotal moment in Sierra Leone’s governance reform efforts, reaffirming its active engagement in the APRM—a Pan-African initiative aimed at fostering self-assessment, institutional strengthening, and peer learning among African nations.
Government’s Commitment to Inclusive Governance
Speaking at the event, Hon. Amara Kallon, Minister of Public Administration and Political Affairs and APRM National Focal Point, emphasized the APRM’s crucial role in promoting democratic resilience, improving governance systems, and facilitating national dialogue. He highlighted that the newly formed Council will oversee Sierra Leone’s second country self-assessment, ensure broad-based stakeholder consultations, and support policy measures that enhance government efficiency and accountability.
Delivering his inaugural statement, Professor Duramany Lakkoh, Chairperson of the APRM National Governing Council, outlined the Council’s core mandates and announced plans to coordinate the 3rd High-Level Forum on South-South and Triangular Cooperation for Sustainable Development—positioning Sierra Leone as a hub for peer learning and collaborative governance.
President Bio’s Call for Institutional Accountability
Congratulating the newly appointed Council members, President Bio commended their dedication and expertise, urging them to uphold the principles of transparency, integrity, and inclusive governance. He stressed the importance of strong leadership and institutional accountability, ensuring that governance structures remain efficient, responsive, and citizen-focused.
