Freetown, April 29, 2025 – President Julius Maada Bio has met with the leadership of the Sierra Leone Labour Congress at State House, where they provided updates on preparations for this year’s International Workers’ Day and commended his administration for progress in the labour sector.
Minister of Labour, Employment, and Social Security, Mohamed Rahman Swaray, led the engagement, emphasizing the uniqueness of this year’s celebration, which will recognize distinguished individuals across various professions. He also confirmed that the recently concluded Social Dialogue sessions will now become a permanent mechanism guided by a structured blueprint.
Labour Congress President Mohamed Sallieu Bangura expressed gratitude for President Bio’s openness in engaging with the Congress ahead of Workers’ Day, praising the reforms implemented in the sector. Secretary-General Max K. Conteh echoed these sentiments, stating that unlike previous meetings centered on grievances, their visit aimed to commend the government for notable improvements, including the establishment of the Social Dialogue Forum and proactive labour law revisions.
Conteh highlighted Sierra Leone’s stability in avoiding major industrial strikes under President Bio’s tenure, attributing it to the government’s timely review of key labour policies. He also revealed that, for the first time since 1985, Sierra Leone has cleared its financial arrears to the International Labour Organization (ILO), restoring its voting rights and influence on the global labour platform.
In response, President Bio emphasized the importance of dialogue in national development, reaffirming his government’s commitment to a structured and responsive labour sector. He praised Minister Swaray for maintaining industrial peace and commended the Labour Congress for its patriotism.
“As leaders, we use constructive engagement to resolve concerns in the best interest of the nation,” President Bio stated. “Ensuring workers are heard and their welfare prioritized is essential for our collective development.”
