Freetown, June 28, 2025 — Rokel Commercial Bank has officially returned to Cline Town, rekindling its presence in one of Freetown’s most historically and economically significant communities. This marks a major milestone in the bank’s drive for expansion and modernization, decades after the closure of Barclays Bank PLC during the civil war.
The launch of the new branch, fully equipped with modern banking services, is seen as a symbol of economic renewal in a region once famed for its strategic importance—home to Sierra Leone’s seaport and the prestigious Fourah Bay College.
Addressing a jubilant crowd, Rokel Bank’s Managing Director, Dr. Walton Ekundayo Gilpin, reaffirmed the institution’s long-term commitment to the community. He described the bank as a “Solution Cathedral,” devoted to nurturing customer needs in line with financial inclusion and innovation.
“This has been our unique selling point,” said Gilpin, “but a key one is the array of digital products like Rokel Simkorpor, Agency Banking, Instant Payment Switch, Visa Cards, and many more we have introduced to make life easy for our customers.”
The branch opening was attended by key stakeholders including the Chairman of Rokel Bank’s Board of Directors, John Sumaila, and a senior representative of the Bank of Sierra Leone, who praised the move:
“This expansion aligns seamlessly with the Bank of Sierra Leone’s broader mandate to promote financial stability, enhance access to credit and support economic development.”
With cheers echoing through the streets of Cline Town, it’s clear the community sees the bank’s return as more than business—it’s a hopeful reminder that progress is not only possible but promised.
