RSLAF Refutes Claims of School Demolition

By Sallieu S, Kanu

Freetown, July 13, 2025 — The Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) has released an official statement firmly denying allegations circulating in the media regarding plans to demolish the premises of Services Secondary School or transfer military land to private businesses.

According to Major Yayah Brima, Esq., Media Operations Officer at Army Headquarters, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant-General Amara Idara Bangura, has no intention of demolishing the school premises located at Juba Barracks nor assign any portion of its land to external commercial entities.

Clarification of Facts

– RSLAF asserts that the information has been deliberately distorted by individuals aiming to protect private interests.

– Services Secondary School is not only military-owned but also chaired by the CDS himself as part of RSLAF’s educational governance structure.

– The school was established by the Armed Forces on November 22,1961 to nurture future military leaders. Its alumni include key defence personnel such as the recently promoted Major-General Sahr David Thomas Ngaujah, now Chief of General Staff.

Land Encroachment Challenges

– Originally surveyed at over 50 acres, land at Juba Barracks has suffered years of illegal encroachment, with only 23 acres remaining.

– Makeshift structures have emerged, some built by unauthorized individuals—reportedly including former students—without consent from military authorities.

In response, the CDS has ordered the removal of these makeshifts to restore the barracks’ perimeters, emphasizing that no demolition of school buildings has been authorized or planned.

Strategic Reforms and Soldier Welfare

– Since his appointment on November 19, 2024, the CDS has launched a strategic reform plan addressing security threats and welfare challenges.

– Among these reforms is the construction of mini shops at military frontages, designed to generate transparent revenue to improve soldiers’ living conditions, particularly within dilapidated barracks.

RSLAF warns that certain misinformation campaigns are politically motivated efforts meant to undermine military leadership and derail reform momentum.

The Armed Forces reaffirm their unwavering support for the education of soldiers’ children and the preservation of all military-owned institutions.
