Sierra Leone – January 19, 2026: In a historic step toward strengthening healthcare delivery, Sierra Leone’s Minister of Health, Dr. Austin Demby, on Monday officially launched the country’s first-ever National Health Information Hub on behalf of President Julius Maada Bio.
The new hub is designed to provide real-time data on key maternal and child health indicators, including pregnancies, deliveries, antenatal and postnatal care, immunization, and mortality. By centralizing and digitizing health information, the system will enable policymakers, healthcare providers, and development partners to make evidence-based decisions that directly improve health outcomes.
Significance of the National Health Information Hub
- Data-driven decision making: The hub ensures that health policies and interventions are guided by accurate, up-to-date information rather than estimates or fragmented records.
- Maternal and child health focus: With real-time tracking of pregnancies, deliveries, and child immunization, the hub strengthens Sierra Leone’s ability to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates.
- Alignment with global goals: The initiative supports UN Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Wellbeing), reinforcing Sierra Leone’s commitment to achieving Universal Health Coverage.
- Improved resource allocation: By identifying gaps and trends, the hub helps government and partners allocate resources more effectively to areas of greatest need.
- Transparency and accountability: The system enhances monitoring and reporting, ensuring that progress in healthcare delivery is measurable and visible to citizens and stakeholders.
Dr. Demby described the launch as a “ground-breaking moment for healthcare in Sierra Leone,” noting that the hub will transform how the country manages health data and responds to public health challenges.
This development marks a major milestone in Sierra Leone’s ongoing efforts to modernize its healthcare system and build resilience against future health crises.
