Freetown, January 30, 2026: Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh has convened a high-level stakeholder meeting at State House to advance the establishment of the Sierra Leone Commodity Board, following a recent Cabinet decision.
The meeting focused on two major outcomes: the formal creation of a national Commodity Board and the Government’s decision to assume the role of sole exporter of selected commodities, beginning with cocoa. Stakeholders discussed practical steps to ensure effective implementation of these measures.
Translating Policy into Action
Chief Minister Sengeh underscored that the engagement was designed to move Cabinet decisions into tangible action. He emphasized the collective responsibility of institutions present to align strategies with national priorities and deliver results.
Stakeholder Contributions
- Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security stressed that a government-led export model requires extensive coordination, technical preparation, and collaboration across the value chain.
- Produce Monitoring Board (PMB) outlined operational tools needed to strengthen quality assurance, including moisture meters, cocoa cutters, and cashew cutters.
- Sierra Leone Standards Bureau (SLSB) highlighted the importance of reliable power supply to support regulatory functions.
Other institutions represented included the Produce Marketing Company (PMC), Ministry of Trade and Industry, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Civic Education, and the Bank of Sierra Leone.
Expected Impact
The establishment of the Commodity Board is projected to:
- Strengthen regulation of agricultural commodities.
- Improve export quality and competitiveness.
- Increase value addition within Sierra Leone.
- Ensure fairer returns for farmers.
Officials noted that the initiative directly supports Pillar One of the Big Five Game Changers, “Feed Salone,” by boosting agricultural productivity, enhancing food security, and driving inclusive economic growth.
