By Ibrahim S. Bangura

Los Angeles, USA — The recently concluded 2025 Salone Awards of Excellence USA has spotlighted Sierra Leonean ingenuity, leadership, and cultural pride on the global stage, honoring exceptional members of the diaspora who continue to uplift the nation’s image abroad.

Among this year’s most notable honorees was Janet Jumu, who claimed the title of TikToker/Content Creator of the Year. With hundreds of thousands of followers, Jumu has used her platform to amplify Sierra Leonean music and culture, winning widespread admiration through her engaging and consistent content. Her award, based on popular vote, reflected her deep connection with the diaspora community.

Also capturing the hearts of voters was Grace Bangura, who won Social Media Personality of the Year. Known for her vibrant online presence and advocacy for Sierra Leonean causes, Bangura continues to inspire digital audiences with messages of empowerment and unity.

In the music category, John Lansana, known artistically as J.Lans, received the Best New Artist of the Year award. As a multifaceted musician, songwriter, and producer, J.Lans has garnered attention for his Afrobeat-infused sound and emotionally resonant lyrics, quickly becoming a favorite among Sierra Leoneans abroad.

The event was masterminded by James Barack Kamara, a Theatre Technology and Arts student at Foothill College in California and CEO of the Salone Awards of Excellence. Kamara emphasized the event’s mission to redefine how the world views Sierra Leone.

“For too long, when people think of Sierra Leone, they think of civil war, Ebola, or the Blood Diamond movie. But we are more than that — we are a beautiful people with a rich history, culture, and resilience,” Kamara told Premier News.

He underscored the importance of celebrating Sierra Leoneans thriving in U.S. states such as California, Arizona, and Texas, noting that timely recognition is key to preserving and celebrating contributions.

Marking a significant shift, the 2025 edition moved from its traditional East Coast venues — Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. — to the Western U.S., responding to the growing presence of Sierra Leonean communities in that region.

“Decentralization is key to nationwide diaspora inclusion,” Kamara explained. “We want to build something our children can look forward to every year — a celebration of who we are as a people.”

With strong community backing and meticulous planning, the Salone Awards are evolving beyond a one-night celebration. They now represent a cultural movement — a call to uplift and honor Sierra Leonean excellence in fields such as education, medicine, arts, community leadership, and entertainment.

As Kamara and his team continue to blaze a trail, the world is invited to witness Sierra Leone’s vibrant diaspora redefine success with dignity, pride, and purpose.
