Salone Payment Switch Revolutionizes Financial Transactions

Freetown, Sierra Leone: The banking sector in Sierra Leone is undergoing a major transformation with the full rollout of the Salone Payment Switch, a cutting-edge system designed to streamline financial transactions across the country.

Developed under the leadership of Bank of Sierra Leone Governor Dr. Ibrahim Stevens and backed by the World Bank, the Salone Payment Switch has now been adopted by all commercial banks, mobile money providers, and fintech institutions. The platform enables seamless interoperability between financial service providers, allowing customers to send and receive money across different banks and mobile networks with unprecedented ease.

For many Sierra Leoneans, the impact is already being felt. One customer, who maintains accounts with two commercial banks, shared his experience:

“Before, cheque payments could take over three days to reflect in my account, which was a big challenge for my business. I often had to deal in cash. But now, transactions are much faster and more reliable.”

Financial experts are hailing the system as a “game changer” for the national economy. By promoting a cashless ecosystem, the switch is expected to reduce reliance on physical currency and ease pressure on the Leone.

“This system promotes a cashless economy, and over time, it will reduce pressure on the Leone. It’s good for the economy and even better for businesses,” said one financial analyst.

As adoption continues to grow, the Salone Payment Switch is poised to unlock new opportunities for entrepreneurs, consumers, and businesses of all sizes—ushering in a new era of financial inclusion and efficiency in Sierra Leone.
