Sierra Leone: COBA old boys boost retired teachers

Old boys of Christ the King College, a secondary school for boys in the southern city of Bo, who graduated in the year 2006 have on Saturday August 8, 2020 donated food and none food items to 13 retired teachers of the school. The donation took place at the school campus on the outskirts of Bo along Mahun Boima Road.

The donated items include: a bag of rice (25kg), a packet of Jombo Maggie, a gallon of vegetable oil and Le 100,000 cash to each of the thirteen teachers. In a ceremony attended by retired and serving teachers, and other stakeholders, Makaya Abraham Charles, the Chairman of the member of the Class of 2006, did the symbolic presentation of the donated items, accompanied by a cross section of former students who constitute the graduating Class.

The purpose of the donation was to help cushion the economic impact on the retired teachers of the school during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Presenting the donated items, the Chairman explained that COBA Alumni Association recently spearheaded donation of food items to the active teachers of the school, noting that one cannot overemphasize the sacrifices towards the feeding of the current teachers at CKC. “This must have an oversight from the National body,” he said.

“However, this class observed that retired teachers were left out in the said project by COBA National by default (since the project only targeted current teachers at CKC),” he said, adding that “It is against this background that class of 2006 has deemed it fit to initiate this project.”

He said that members of Class of 2006 contributed certain amount so as to make the project a reality.

Receiving the donation, Michael Kabineh Baio, a retired teacher who also formerly headed the St. Michael’s Boarding Home, CKC, thanked members of the Class for their kind donation, adding, “I am glad to see my former students excelling in society.” “The joy of every teacher is to see that his students are successful. I am proud of you,” he concluded.

Mr. Alfred E. Kanu, a former teacher who taught for the longest number of years, said that after completing teacher training at the Milton Margai College of Education in 1973, he went to CKC. He added that at that time it was Father Lamb who was the president. “I wish Father was here to see what his children have done for us,” he said. On behalf of his colleagues, he thanked members of the Class for the donation.

On behalf of the School, Mr Brima Swaray, a Senior Teacher of the School thanked the Class for remembering their retired teachers and prayed for other classes of alumnus to emulate them.
