Freetown, Sierra Leone – The Government of Sierra Leone, through the Office of the Vice President, hosted a special state dinner on June 2, 2025, in honor of Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, who is on a two-day working visit aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between the two West African nations.
Welcoming the Senegalese delegation, Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh extended greetings on behalf of President Julius Maada Bio, emphasizing the significance of the visit in fostering diplomatic and strategic cooperation. “On behalf of His Excellency, President Julius Maada Bio, we warmly welcome the Prime Minister of Senegal to Freetown,” he stated.
In a lighthearted moment, Dr. Jalloh acknowledged the long wait for dinner, opting to keep his remarks brief. He proposed a toast to the enduring friendship between Sierra Leone and Senegal, before highlighting the high-level working sessions scheduled for June 3, 2025, between President Bio, Prime Minister Sonko, and senior ministers.
Strengthening Economic Ties
In response, Prime Minister Sonko expressed his appreciation for the warm reception and underscored his commitment to deepening economic discussions between Senegal and Sierra Leone. He recalled previous engagements with Vice President Jalloh during visits to Senegal and noted that this visit was the result of an invitation extended by Jalloh.
Sonko also thanked President Bio for participating in the recent inauguration of Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, emphasizing the importance of regional partnerships in promoting sustainable development.
Diplomatic Relations and Future Collaborations
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mrs. Francess Piage Alghali, formally welcomed the Senegalese Prime Minister and delegation, reaffirming Sierra Leone’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic ties through continued collaboration.
“The presence of the Prime Minister in Sierra Leone is a testament to the strong relationship between our two nations,” she noted, assuring that Sierra Leone remains committed to deepening bilateral cooperation.
The visit marks an important step in reinforcing diplomatic, economic, and strategic partnerships between Sierra Leone and Senegal, with further discussions expected as leaders continue their engagements.
