Sierra Leone Signs Landmark Renewable Energy Deal with Global South Utilities

Dubai, UAE – February 7, 2026: Sierra Leone has taken a major step toward transforming its energy sector with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Energy and Global South Utilities (GSU) of Abu Dhabi. The agreement, signed on the sidelines of the World Governments Summit in Dubai, paves the way for feasibility studies and investment in renewable energy projects of up to 500MW.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio, underscoring the government’s commitment to advancing Sierra Leone’s energy transition and powering key demand centers in mining, agriculture, and manufacturing.

Minister of Energy, Hon. Cyril Grant, described the partnership as a milestone in Sierra Leone’s energy journey. “This MoU represents a crucial milestone in our efforts to transform Sierra Leone’s energy landscape. We look forward to working with GSU to unlock new opportunities and drive economic development,” he said.

GSU’s Managing Director and CEO, Ali Alshimmari, emphasized the importance of reliable energy for economic progress. “This MoU with Sierra Leone reflects a shared focus on practical, bankable renewable solutions that strengthen industry, expand access, and support long-term resilience,” he noted, highlighting the company’s technical expertise and experience in African markets.

The collaboration is expected to enhance energy access, reliability, and sustainability across Sierra Leone, aligning with the country’s commitment to a low-carbon future. By leveraging GSU’s expertise and investment, Sierra Leone aims to accelerate renewable energy development and stimulate economic growth through innovative solutions.
