Sierra Leone – January 2026: The National Chairman of the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), Jimmy Batilo Songa, has been commended by elders and members of the party for his inclusive leadership style and early achievements since assuming office just a few months ago.
Party stakeholders described him as one of the most effective chairmen in SLPP history, noting his ability to embrace all members regardless of political lineage, ethnicity, or social status. They emphasized that his leadership reflects the party’s founding principle of “One Country, One People.”
In a telephone interview with Premier News, Chairman Songa reaffirmed his commitment to building a united and disciplined SLPP. He highlighted several milestones achieved under his leadership, including:
- Financial Strengthening: Raising approximately Six Billion Old Leone to support party activities.
- Transparency & Accountability: Introducing a financial report and strategic plan to enhance credibility.
- Attractiveness & Growth: Implementing reforms that make the party more appealing to new and existing members.
- Discipline & Cohesion: Enforcing standards that strengthen unity and respect across the party.
“Let me be clear, no one will stop me from interacting with any SLPP member, regardless of their interests or ambitions within the party,” Songa stated. “My role is to foster unity and mutual respect, and I will not allow anyone to dictate how I carry out my responsibilities.”
Chairman Songa stressed that the flagbearer race has not yet begun, reiterating that his immediate priority is to consolidate party unity and ensure effective functioning. He underscored the importance of openness and accessibility, noting that engaging with members and bringing senior figures closer to the party’s administrative leadership is key to long-term success.
The SLPP Chairman’s emphasis on inclusivity and strategic reforms has been widely welcomed as the party positions itself for future challenges and opportunities ahead of the 2028 general elections.
