UK Hosts Pre‑Departure Reception for Chevening and Commonwealth Scholars

Freetown, Sierra Leone – The British High Commissioner has hosted a pre‑departure reception for Sierra Leonean recipients of the Chevening and Commonwealth Scholarships, as they prepare to begin their studies at universities across the United Kingdom.

The event celebrated the scholars’ achievements and underscored the UK’s continued commitment to education, leadership development, and empowering future changemakers. Officials noted that the scholarships provide access to world‑class academic opportunities, equipping Sierra Leonean students with the knowledge, skills, and networks needed to contribute meaningfully to national development.

The reception also highlighted the strong and enduring partnership between the United Kingdom and Sierra Leone, built on decades of collaboration and a shared commitment to progress, opportunity, and sustainable development.

Among those present were the Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, the Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, the Presidents of the Chevening Alumni Association and Commonwealth Alumni Association Sierra Leone (CAASL), the Head of FAWE Sierra Leone, and other distinguished guests who joined in encouraging the departing scholars.

The High Commission extended congratulations to all departing scholars, wishing them success as they embark on this new academic journey. The scholars were urged to make the most of their opportunities abroad and return ready to contribute to Sierra Leone’s growth.
