Freetown, Sierra Leone—The Ballanta Academy of Music and Performing Arts (BAMPA) received a significant boost on April 25, 2025, as Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh and the John Akar Foundation donated NLe 225,000 to support the institution’s growth and artistic development. The contributions were made during a vibrant fundraising event at the Ballanta Auditorium, attended by government officials, artists, students, and music enthusiasts.
The evening was not just about raising funds; it was a celebration of Sierra Leone’s rich musical heritage and BAMPA’s vital role in preserving and promoting the arts.
Delivering the keynote address, Vice President Jalloh emphasized the Academy’s transformative impact, particularly on students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
“The work you do here is not just about music; it’s about shaping the future of this country, empowering young people, and giving them the opportunity to realize their dreams,” he said.
In a symbolic gesture of commitment, Dr. Jalloh announced a personal donation of NLe 200,000, contributed by himself, his sister, and a circle of close friends. He reaffirmed the government’s support for initiatives that foster artistic growth, inclusivity, and national development.
“The government is committed to ensuring that this kind of initiative is supported and that the Academy continues to flourish,” he added, receiving resounding applause from the audience.
John Akar Foundation’s Contribution
Mr. Gibril Saccoh, representing the John Akar Foundation, echoed similar sentiments while presenting a donation of NLe 25,000 to BAMPA.
“We believe that institutions like Ballanta are vital to shaping the future of Sierra Leone’s artistic landscape,” Saccoh stated, underscoring the foundation’s commitment to creativity, education, and cultural preservation.
Academy’s Gratitude and Vision for Growth
Receiving the donations on behalf of the Academy, Dr. Julius Spencer, Chairman of BAMPA, expressed profound gratitude. He highlighted the Academy’s most pressing needs, including instrument modernization, facility upgrades, scholarship support, and expanded community outreach.
“Tonight’s support gives us renewed strength. Every contribution helps us open doors for more young people who dream of making a difference through music and performance,” Dr. Spencer said.
The evening culminated in captivating student performances, featuring traditional drumming and other musical displays that showcased Ballanta’s impact on artistic excellence in Sierra Leone.
As the night drew to a close, attendees expressed optimism that continued support for institutions like BAMPA would help solidify Sierra Leone’s reputation as a cultural hub in West Africa.
