Freetown, July 8, 2026: The Freetown City Council (FCC) has received 40 three-hundred-litre dustbins from  the WAICA Re in support of its ongoing waste management campaign, #DortiMusGo.

Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr announced the donation on Tuesday, describing it as a “timely and valuable contribution” to the city’s efforts to promote cleaner and healthier environments.

The bins will be distributed to 20 municipal schools, with each school receiving two. FCC has assured that regular waste collections will be facilitated to ensure proper disposal. Mayor Aki-Sawyerr encouraged residents to register with FCC-approved waste service providers, stressing that collective responsibility is key to keeping Freetown clean.

FCC has been implementing a series of waste management initiatives under the Transform Freetown agenda. The #DortiMusGo campaign, launched to tackle indiscriminate dumping, emphasizes community participation and accountability in waste disposal.

Key projects include:

  • School-based waste management: Providing bins and sensitization programs to instill proper waste practices among pupils.
  • Community collection services: Partnering with approved waste service providers to ensure households and businesses have access to reliable disposal systems.
  • Sanitation drives: Regular clean-up exercises across Freetown, involving city agencies, security forces, and volunteers.
  • Public awareness campaigns: Using radio, social media, and community meetings to discourage illegal dumping and promote responsible waste handling.

Mayor Aki-Sawyerr has consistently appealed to residents to stop paying unregulated collectors, including vulnerable groups such as kush addicts, and instead use FCC-approved providers by calling 8244.

The WAICA Re donation adds to ongoing partnerships between FCC and private sector actors, reinforcing the council’s drive to create a safer, cleaner, and greener Freetown.
