Youth Sentenced to Six Months for Iron Rod Theft at Construction Site

 Freetown, Sierra Leone: Magistrate Mamakoh Saio Kallon of Pademba Road Court No. 3 has sentenced Brima Lamin, a young man, to six months’ imprisonment for the theft of construction materials at the Milton Margai site in Goderich.

Lamin appeared before the court on Tuesday,  July 15, 2025, and pleaded guilty to Larceny, contrary to Section 2 of the Larceny Act of 1916. According to the charge sheet, on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, Lamin stole a 5×8-inch iron rod valued at Le 350, along with other assorted items, bringing the total value to Le 600.

The accused was not legally represented and made no formal plea for mitigation, though he appealed to the court for leniency. In response to his guilty plea and allocutus, Magistrate Kallon handed down a sentence of six month in  imprison.

The case highlights the increasing issue of petty theft at construction sites across Freetown and the challenges faced by courts in balancing justice with compassion.
