FREETOWN, October 12, 2026: The Indian Business Community in Sierra Leone has called for stronger engagement with the Ministry of Employment, Labour and Social Security to improve labour relations, enhance compliance with labour laws, and address concerns surrounding workers’ end-of-service benefits.
The appeal was made during a courtesy visit by a delegation of the Indian Business Community, led by President of the Indian Business Council, H.L. Balani, to the Minister of Employment, Labour and Social Security, Hon. Umaru Napoleon Koroma, in Freetown.
Welcoming the delegation, Commissioner of Labour Sinneh Bockarie encouraged members to present issues affecting their businesses, particularly those related to labour administration and compliance with existing labour regulations.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Mr. Balani reaffirmed the Indian business community’s commitment to working closely with the Ministry and strengthening collaboration with the Government on labour-related matters.
He emphasized the need for a clear understanding of end-of-service benefits and the legal obligations governing them, noting that greater clarity would help employers avoid compliance challenges. He also assured the Minister that the community would continue engaging the Commissioner of Labour and other relevant authorities to address concerns affecting its members.
Responding, Minister Koroma outlined his vision for fostering a balanced and mutually beneficial relationship between employers and employees, stressing that both groups are vital to economic growth and national development.
The Minister noted that the Ministry would continue to serve as a neutral arbiter in workplace disputes, safeguarding the interests of both employers and workers while ensuring adherence to the law.
He further reaffirmed his commitment to involving employers and key stakeholders in the formulation and implementation of labour policies, urging the Indian business community to provide feedback on the practical application of labour laws to strengthen compliance and ensure policies remain responsive to the needs of both employers and employees.
The meeting underscored the importance of continued cooperation between the Ministry and the Indian business community in promoting workers’ rights, strengthening labour law compliance, and creating a stable business environment conducive to investment and economic growth in Sierra Leone
