Benguema Barracks — The second batch of more than 1,000 cadets and recruits undergoing nine months of military training at the Peace Mission Training Centre (PMTC) and Armed Forces Training Centre (AFTC) successfully passed off the square on Saturday, 4 July 2026, marking the completion of their first phase of training, according to the Director of Defence Public Relations and Information.
In 2023, the Government of Sierra Leone approved the recruitment of 3,000 youths into the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF). The recruitment, conducted in three batches, forms part of the Government’s Big Five Game Changers initiative, specifically its youth employment scheme.
Last year, the first batch of 1,017 cadets and recruits was enlisted into the Armed Forces. The ongoing recruitment drive is expected to inject fresh energy into the military while addressing the long-standing issue of personnel wastage caused by death, medical discharge, retirement, resignation, dismissal, desertion, and absence without leave.
The successful passing-out parade at Benguema Barracks underscores the Armed Forces’ commitment to strengthening national defence capacity and providing employment opportunities for Sierra Leonean youths.
