March 18, 2026: The National Sports Authority (NSA), led by Executive Director Dr. Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai, has held a strategic meeting with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to explore a bilateral partnership aimed at strengthening sports development in Sierra Leone.
The meeting, attended by NSA directors and UNDP officials, focused on expanding opportunities for sports infrastructure, innovation, and youth empowerment.
Expanding Funding and Infrastructure
Dr. Abdulai emphasized that while the NSA has historically relied on government funding, his leadership over the past 23 months has prioritized diversifying financial support. He outlined key areas for collaboration, including:
- Development of artificial turf facilities nationwide
- Promotion of sports entrepreneurship, particularly for retired athletes
- Integration of technology to modernize sports
- Strengthening grassroots sporting activities to create jobs for young people
He reaffirmed the Authority’s broader mission of using sports as a tool for youth empowerment and economic growth.
UNDP’s Perspective
UNDP Innovation Officer underscored the importance of innovation in sports development, highlighting the need for reliable athlete data systems, safe and inclusive environments, and conflict management strategies to prevent tensions from escalating into violence.
UNDP Gender Specialist Kadie Jumu raised concerns about gender inequality in sports, stressing the importance of safeguarding and promoting women’s participation. She noted that male dominance in the sector remains a challenge that must be addressed to ensure inclusivity.
Shared Priorities
Both parties agreed to continue engagements toward a structured partnership, focusing on:
- Gender equality in sports
- Peacebuilding and social cohesion
- Innovation and digital transformation
- Climate change and environmental sustainability
- Development of green and solar-powered sports infrastructure
The meeting marks a significant milestone in Sierra Leone’s sports development agenda. By aligning with UNDP, the NSA aims to build a more inclusive, innovative, and sustainable sports ecosystem that empowers young people, promotes equality, and strengthens national cohesion.
