Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio has addressed growing speculation about his health, firmly denying claims that he is battling cancer and clarifying that his recent physical changes are the result of intentional weight loss.

Speaking during Eid prayers, the President responded directly to critics and social media rumors regarding his body weight and facial appearance.

“When I was working to put my body down, many people were saying I have been infected with cancer. Inshallah, God will never give me cancer,” President Bio stated.

He emphasized that his weight loss was voluntary and part of a personal decision to improve his health and fitness, rather than any underlying medical condition.

The President further addressed speculation about his wellbeing, stressing that matters of life and death are ultimately in God’s hands. “I will only go to God at the time He has ordained, and nobody in this world will determine that,” he added.

Public Concerns and Speculation

His remarks come amid heightened public discussion over his appearance, with many observers drawing their own conclusions prior to his clarification. Recent images of the President appearing physically diminished had fueled speculation about his ability to continue performing his duties as Head of State.

Reports in some quarters suggested that the President may have been fatigued following his demanding international and local assignments, including his recent appointment as Chairman of ECOWAS. Other accounts claimed he may be following a diet regimen to maintain a healthy lifestyle, while some speculated about possible underlying health conditions.

Earlier, the Press Secretary at the Office of the President, Yusuf Keketoma Sandi Esq., categorically dismissed the claims, assuring the public that President Bio remains in good health.

“The President is in good health, sir. He is fit to do the job, and he will continue to do the job,” Sandi told Premier News.

Delivered in a reflective and reassuring tone, President Bio’s comments came as he joined Muslim faithful in marking the Eid celebrations. The occasion provided him an opportunity not only to celebrate but also to address national concerns, putting to rest ongoing rumors while underscoring the growing influence of public scrutiny and social media commentary on the personal lives of political leaders.
